Evergreen is Retro: Top 10 Bollywood Singers

"Old-fashion" has been in trend ever since each generation has something new to offer. Be it songs, movies, actors, fashion, black and white has always ruled. Let us look at a few of these everlasting heroes and their music that keep Bollywood alive till date:
04.08.1929 - 13.10.1987
The true legend himself. The famous Kishore Kumar. He was a full package. Be it an Indian playback singer, actor, music director, lyricist, writer, director, producer or screenwriter for that matter, he's done it all. An everlasting talent of music and acting. A few of the songs that still remain a favourite for most are, "Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si", "Yeh Shaam Mastani", "Mere Saamne Wali Khidki Me" and "Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai"
27.06.1939 - 04.01.1994
R.D. Burman, an Indian music director who has composed music for 331 films. His major works involve his wife, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. He has brought many to fame and indeed all the credits go to him, as music remains incomplete if we don't hear the catchy beats that have been composed by him. From "Mehbooba Mehbooba" to "Mone Pore Ruby Roy", "Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge" to "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko" … These songs remain a classic that have been remixed as well by various artists, but quality remains always the same.
24.12.1924 - 31.07.1980
Our very own, Md, Rafi. Indian playback singer. He was considered to be one of the greatest and most influential singers of our Indian Subcontinent. A few of his upbeat dance numbers have been replayed on repeat by each and every generation, at parties and social gatherings, because they fit the occasion and bring in the positive vibes. "Taarif Karu Kya Uski", "Deewana Hua Badal", "Abhi Na Jao Chor Kar" and "Baar Baar Dekho Hazaar Baar Dekho" are some that never grow old.

Prabodh Chandra Dey or commonly known as Manna Dey. Indian playback singer, Indian classical vocalist, musician, music director and singer. One of the most versatile vocalists of the Hindi Film Industry. He continues to remain a legend and live on in his songs …

Shamshad Begum was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi Film Industry. A versatile artist, who sang over 6000 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Punjabi. Out of these, 1287 songs happened to be Hindi songs. A talented woman in those times, indeed! "Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar", "Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar", "Kajra Mohabbat Wala" and "Saiyan Dil Me Aana Re" are still heard by most and remixed as well by many other artists.
Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle
Born on 28th September 1929, considered the Nightingale of Bollywood and Asha Bhosle born on 8th September 1933 are the famous sisters of the entire industry that are still a very precious part of the Indian Cinema. Songs like, "Jaanu Meri Jaan", "In Aankhon Ki Masti" and "Lag Jaa Gale", "Gori Hai Kalaiyan" are some songs sung by them that remind us of the old times of life.

A few of these artists happen to live on in their songs they've shared. They never seem to lose their importance neither quality. In this lockdown period, if you haven't heard any of these songs, if you have forgotten their existence as well; don't forget to play them in any app, or television and revive your good moments with the feel-good factor. A cup of coffee with a book in hand and retro playing in the background. Couldn't start your week with a more aesthetic feel than this!

-Namrata Dey
